Mainers Overpay for Electricity

Check your power bill. If you signed up with one of the alternative power suppliers, you’re probably paying significantly more for power than you would be under the standard offer.  When Maine “deregulated” the electric supply portion our power bills, it was supposed to lead to lower costs.  Today, the standard offer is the lowest price available – but customers aren’t automatically switched over to the standard offer.  Instead, the contracts with third-party power providers, like Electricity Maine, renew automatically.

In fact, Electricity Maine appears to be one of the largest offenders.  Although they don’t have the absolute highest rates on the list, they have a lot of customers and a $100 fee for cancelling the contract.
